Caserma difensiva del Malamot, Military barracks at Mont Malamot, France
Caserma difensiva del Malamot is a fortification built into a mountain slope at approximately 2,914 meters (9,561 feet) elevation, consisting of three separate stone sections. The structure contains two rows of firing ports for riflemen and two covered gun emplacements on its longer sides to accommodate multiple machine guns.
Construction of this barracks began in 1889, making it Italy's highest military installation at that time. A protected stairway on its northwest side was later adapted in the 1930s to support military defenses built across the Western Alpine region.
The rocks surrounding the barracks display carvings left by soldiers who were stationed here, including names and unit markings that tell the story of their time at this remote alpine location.
The barracks sits on a steep mountain slope, so visitors should wear sturdy boots and allow extra time for climbing. Access is via marked alpine trails, and the high elevation requires acclimatization, especially if combining a visit with other mountain activities in the area.
A protected stairway on the northwest side leads to an observation post positioned near a border marker between Italy and France. This passageway once served as a strategic point for monitoring the terrain and remains today as a quiet reminder of the post's borderland position.
