Sanctuary of Agios Lot, Byzantine monastery and archaeological site near the Dead Sea, Jordan
The Sanctuary of Agios Lot encompasses a basilical church constructed at the entrance of a natural cave overlooking the modern town of Safi.
Archaeological excavations have revealed artifacts from Early and Middle Bronze Age, with the monastery complex dating from the 5th to 7th centuries CE.
The cave holds religious significance as the believed refuge of Lot and his daughters after their escape from biblical Sodom and Gomorrah.
The sanctuary features six mosaic pavements, marble floors, and sandstone pilaster capitals displaying Maltese crosses with remnants of red paint.
Located 255 meters below sea level, this monastic complex contains a pilgrims' hostel, communal dining room, and burial chamber with water reservoir.
