Ehime Prefecture, Prefecture on Shikoku island, Japan

The northwestern region of Shikoku contains mountainous terrain in its interior while maintaining developed coastal plains along the Seto Inland Sea.

The territory, formerly known as Iyo Province, transformed into Ehime Prefecture during the Meiji period reforms of 1871 that restructured Japan's administrative divisions.

Twenty-six Buddhist temples within the prefecture form essential stops along the traditional Shikoku Pilgrimage circuit, drawing spiritual travelers throughout the year.

The Shimanami Kaido highway system connects the main islands through multiple bridges, offering direct transportation routes between Ehime and mainland Honshu.

The prefecture leads Japan in mandarin orange production, with terraced orchards covering the coastal hillsides and providing employment for local communities.
