The northwestern city of Takaoka spreads across 209 square kilometers, bordered by mountains and the Sea of Japan in Toyama Prefecture.

In 1609, Maeda Toshinaga established Takaoka as a fortified town, but the castle was demolished in 1615 following orders from the Tokugawa shogunate.

The Takaoka Mikurumayama Festival on May 1 features seven decorated floats parading through streets, continuing a tradition from the early 17th century.

Two railway stations serve Takaoka, with the Hokuriku Shinkansen providing direct connections to Tokyo in less than three hours.

The bronze Great Buddha statue at Daibutsu-ji temple stands 15.85 meters tall, making it the third largest Buddha statue in Japan.
