Onomichi, Port city in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan
The city extends along the Seto Inland Sea, with narrow streets and stone staircases climbing up steep hills toward numerous temples and viewpoints.
The port of Onomichi opened in 1168 and became a central hub for rice distribution, leading to its recognition as the second city in Hiroshima Prefecture by 1898.
Twenty-five Buddhist temples form a connected walking path through the city, representing centuries of religious and architectural development in the region.
Visitors can access the Shimanami Kaido cycling route directly from Onomichi, connecting the main island of Honshu to Shikoku across six smaller islands.
The combination of maritime activities, elevated temple paths, and literary heritage makes Onomichi a central point for Japanese cinema and television productions.
