Kantō region, Administrative region in eastern Honshu, Japan
Kantō is a region in the eastern part of the main island of Honshū and includes seven prefectures, among them the capital and its surrounding areas. The large plain at its center stretches from the coast to the mountains and forms the most populated part of the country.
At the end of the 16th century, a powerful warrior moved his troops here and made the region the center of his military power. This decision fundamentally changed the political landscape of the country for centuries to come.
Throughout the year, local neighborhoods gather for traditional festivals where they carry portable shrines through the streets and share regional dishes. These events show how close communities remain despite the dense urban environment.
A dense network of trains connects all major cities and allows fast travel between coastal areas and mountain regions. A large international airport east of the capital serves as the arrival point for most visitors from abroad.
The large plain in the center of this region is the biggest flat area in the entire country and is crossed by several rivers. Mountain ranges rise all around, enclosing the wide lowland like a natural frame.
