Nantan, City in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan
Nantan is a city in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, spread across a mountainous area in the central part of the region. The municipality includes several separate districts divided by forested hills and narrow valleys.
The area belonged to Tanba Province and was administered during the Nara period. During the Edo era, it contained the Sonobe Domain before the present city formed in 2006 through the merger of several towns.
The place grows mizuna and other vegetables using methods passed down through generations of local families. Farmers follow a seasonal calendar shaped by the climate and landscape of the region.
The city has elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools located in different districts. Public facilities are spread across the territory and adapted to the mountain roads of the area.
In the Kayabuki no Sato district, houses with thatched roofs stand built using traditional techniques. The roofs are renewed regularly to preserve the building style over time.
