Chikuma, Administrative city in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
Chikuma is a city in Nagano Prefecture located in the Chūbu region on Honshu, the main island of Japan. The municipality spreads along the Chikuma River valley amid forested hills and agricultural land devoted to rice, fruit and vegetable cultivation.
The city was formed in September 2003 through the merger of Koshoku city with the two towns of Togura and Kamiyamada. The fusion aimed to unify administration and strengthen economic development in this part of Nagano Prefecture.
The region contains multiple temples including Chourakuji Temple with thatched roof structures and Zenko-ji Daihongan Branch Temple offering mountain views.
Several railway lines connect the city with other locations in Nagano Prefecture and beyond, including the Shinonoi Line and the Shinano Railway. Expressways provide car access from different directions, and local roads lead into surrounding villages and hamlets.
The Anzu no Sato district contains large apricot orchards that bloom in spring and bear fruit in summer. Visitors can pick apricots themselves during harvest season and watch the processing in local facilities.
