Kitashitara district, Administrative district in Aichi Prefecture, Japan
Kitashitara is an administrative district in northeastern Aichi Prefecture consisting of three municipalities: Shitara town, Toei town, and Toyone village. The area features hilly terrain with forests, small settlements, and rural landscapes.
The district formed in 1878 when an original administrative division split into two new districts. Over time, the number of municipalities shrank significantly through various mergers and consolidations.
Residents here maintain rural traditions visible in local gatherings and how communities work together in daily life. This living culture shapes how the three towns and village function and feel.
The area is hilly and sparsely populated, making a car essential for exploring independently. Roads wind through forests and connect scattered villages, so plan for longer travel times between locations.
The district shrank dramatically from its original 13 villages to today's structure of two towns and one village. This change reflects the rural depopulation that has affected many countryside areas across Japan.
