Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, UNESCO World Heritage Site group in Kyoto, Japan

The Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto encompass seventeen distinct locations, including thirteen Buddhist temples, three Shinto shrines, and one feudal castle across three cities.

When Kyoto became Japan's capital in 794, these architectural structures emerged as centers of imperial power, religious practice, and artistic development until 1868.

The monuments present different architectural styles from multiple periods, featuring wooden temples, rock gardens, ornate pavilions, and traditional landscaping techniques.

Visitors can access all seventeen locations through an extensive network of trains and buses, with the main sites concentrated within central Kyoto's temple district.

The Kiyomizu-dera temple stands without using a single nail in its construction, while its wooden platform extends 13 meters above the hillside.
