Odaiba, Artificial island in Tokyo Bay, Japan.
Odaiba is a reclaimed island in Tokyo Bay with shopping centers, museums, entertainment facilities, and a beach overlooking the Rainbow Bridge. Development spreads across several neighboring districts along the waterfront, where wide plazas and pedestrian paths connect individual buildings.
The island was created in the mid-19th century as a fortification to protect the city from foreign ships. Since the 1980s the site has been redeveloped and expanded into a residential and commercial district.
A giant robot from a Japanese series stands outside a shopping center and moves its head and arms during the day. Visitors gather in front to take photos, while inside the center themed shops sell figures and models.
A monorail connects the island to the city center and stops at several stations along the route. Walkways along the water are wide and wheelchair accessible, with benches at various viewpoints.
A museum houses a circular screen displaying Earth from space. A small replica of the Statue of Liberty looks out over the water, about half the height of the original.
