Maihara, Transport hub in Shiga Prefecture, Japan

Maibara is a town in Shiga Prefecture that spreads along the eastern shore of Lake Biwa, with wooded hills rising on the inland side. The municipality is divided into several settlement clusters separated by farmland and forest, with most buildings concentrated along the railway line.

Several towns joined together in February 2005 to form the current municipality. The merger brought together communities that had existed independently along the lakeshore and in the mountain valleys.

The name comes from the rice fields that once shaped the area, and today you still see patches of farmland between the settlements. In the residential neighborhoods near the station, small shops, noodle bars and commuters mix together as people head to work in the morning and return in the evening.

The main railway station sits at the center and connects local train lines with the high-speed network, so travelers can transfer easily. If you want to explore the lakeshore or the mountains, expect short bus rides or walks from the stations.

In the higher ground near the town, snow often falls in winter while the lakeshore stays mild. This closeness of water and mountain creates shifting weather that can change several times in a single day.
