Kōzuke Province, Historical province in Honshu, Japan
Located in present-day Gunma Prefecture, Kōzuke Province extended across a region bordered by Musashi, Shimotsuke, Mutsu, and Shinano provinces.
During the Heian period from 811, Kōzuke Province held special status as one of three provinces where an Imperial Prince served as nominal ruler.
The province contained numerous post stations along the Nakasendō and Mikuni Kaidō highways, serving as key transportation routes through medieval Japan.
The provincial territory developed into a major center for horse breeding and later became a crucial region for sericulture and silk spinning industries.
Under the Engishiki classification system, Kōzuke ranked among the 13 great countries in importance and 30 far countries in distance from Kyoto.
