Mount Akaishi, Mountain peak in Minami Alps National Park, Japan
Mount Akaishi is a 3,120-meter peak in the Minami Alps National Park with steep slopes and rocky terrain throughout. The summit area opens onto views of surrounding ranges while the eastern side shows deep geological formations and weathered stone features.
The first documented ascent took place in 1879 when Japanese Home Ministry officials reached the summit. This exploration helped map and document many of Japan's alpine peaks during that period.
The name comes from red radiolarite stones scattered across the slopes, with 'akai' meaning red and 'ishi' meaning stone in Japanese. This naming reflects how the landscape's appearance shaped local understanding of the place.
Two main climbing routes serve the mountain with different difficulty levels and walking times. Be prepared for changing weather conditions and steep sections, particularly as you gain elevation through the climb.
A glacial cirque on the eastern flank holds traces of Japan's southernmost glacier, marking a rare geographical feature. The mountain also harbors endangered Akaishi-rindo flowers found nowhere else in the country.
