Samburu National Reserve, Game reserve in Northern Kenya
Samburu National Reserve is a protected area in northern Kenya where the Ewaso Ng'iro River creates distinct habitat zones. The landscape includes acacia woodlands, palm groves, and grasslands that support diverse wildlife.
The reserve was established to protect the region's wildlife and became known internationally when George and Joy Adamson raised a lioness named Elsa there. Their work with the animal led to the creation of the film Born Free.
The Samburu people live near the reserve and maintain pastoral traditions deeply tied to the land and its wildlife. Their way of life reflects how local communities have coexisted with this environment for generations.
Guided safari tours with experienced rangers offer the best way to see wildlife and understand the landscape. Neutral-colored clothing and sturdy shoes make the experience more comfortable.
The reserve hosts animal species found nowhere else in Kenya, including reticulated giraffes, Grevy's zebras, and the slender gerenuk antelope. Seeing several of these together is rare elsewhere in East Africa.
