Western Province

Western Province stretches from Mount Elgon to Lake Victoria and contains the Kakamega Forest alongside farming communities across four counties. The landscape shifts between forested hills, cultivated fields, and flat areas near the lake with numerous towns and villages scattered throughout.

The region served as one of Kenya's seven administrative provinces until 2013, when constitutional changes divided it into four separate county administrations. This restructuring reflected a shift toward greater local autonomy across the country.

The Luhya people form the main ethnic group here, and their customs shape daily life in villages and markets where you can see how communities gather and work together. These traditions remain an active part of how people celebrate and mark important moments throughout the year.

The region has road connections linking its towns and reaching toward neighboring Uganda, making travel between areas straightforward. Expect varying road conditions, especially in rural areas, and plan your routes with local guidance in mind.

The Kakamega Forest represents the easternmost remnant of an ancient rainforest that once stretched across much of Africa. Visitors often overlook this fact, yet it means the forest contains plants and wildlife found nowhere else in the country.
