Karakeche, Coal mining complex in Jumgal District, Naryn Region, Kyrgyzstan.
Karakeche is a coal mining area with five open pit mines located in a valley set between the Moldo Too and Kabak Too mountain ranges. The mines extract deposits that stretch across a substantial territory in the region.
Coal extraction at this location began during the Soviet era in the 1980s and was subsequently managed by different operators. Operations evolved over time through shifts in management and ownership.
The mines faced major changes in 2005 when the Joomart movement, led by Jumgal politician Nurlan Motuev, took control of operations.
The site is located in a remote mountain valley and is most easily accessed through existing rail connections. Visitors should prepare for rugged terrain and variable weather conditions, as this remains an active mining area.
A new railway network was planned to connect the mines directly to the transportation network and improve coal delivery. This infrastructure project aims to significantly increase the efficiency of coal transport to the capital.
