West Baray, Ancient reservoir in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The West Baray extends over eight kilometers in length and two kilometers in width, containing water held by earthen dykes reaching 39 feet high.
Construction of this water management structure occurred during the 11th century under the reigns of King Suryavarman I and King Udayadityavarman II.
The reservoir combines engineering capabilities with religious symbolism, representing the Sea of Creation in Hindu mythology while serving agricultural needs.
Visitors access the central island temple ruins via boats departing from a dock on the southern bank of the reservoir.
Archaeological studies of sediment layers within West Baray reveal a millennium of environmental changes and water management patterns of the Khmer civilization.
