Gwangju, city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea
Gwangju is a city in Gyeonggi Province, located east of Seoul in the central part of South Korea. Its layout shifts from rice fields and small villages on the edges to dense residential blocks and commercial strips closer to the center.
The area served for centuries as agricultural land near the Joseon capital and was governed as an administrative unit of the Gyeonggi region. Rapid urbanization from the 1970s onward turned the surrounding farmland into a built-up area now closely tied to the greater Seoul metropolitan zone.
