Seodaemun District, Administrative district in northwestern Seoul, South Korea
Seodaemun District is located in northwestern Seoul and contains several neighborhoods with mixed residential, commercial, and institutional areas. The district includes Yonsei University, retail zones near Sinchon Station, and connections to four neighboring districts.
The district takes its name from one of Seoul's four main gates during the Joseon Dynasty, with Seodaemun meaning 'Great West Gate' in Korean. The area later became significant as a place of resistance during the colonial period.
Independence Park and its associated museum reflect how the district has become a place where people remember Korea's struggle against colonial rule. Walking through the area, visitors encounter monuments and exhibits that shape how the neighborhood is understood today.
The district is well connected by public transportation with multiple stations and bus routes throughout the area. Visitors can easily navigate between different neighborhoods and attractions using these networks.
Mount Ansan within the district contains ancient signal fire stations that were once used for military communications across the region. From the summit, visitors can see across much of Seoul.
