Bongwonsa, Buddhist temple in Seodaemun District, Seoul, South Korea.
Bongwonsa is a Korean Buddhist temple located at the base of Ansan Mountain, featuring multiple halls and structures arranged within the temple grounds. The main Buddha Hall underwent reconstruction in 1994 and serves as the religious center of the complex.
The temple was founded in 889 by Master Dosun at what is now the site of Yonsei University, then later moved to its current location at the base of Ansan Mountain in 1748. This relocation marked a turning point in its long history of continuous practice.
The temple hosts Yeongsanjae, a Buddhist ceremony featuring traditional music and dance, held annually on June 6 at the grounds. This event brings together visitors who experience the faith expressed through movement and sound.
To reach the temple, take Line 2 to Sinchon Station and exit at Exit 3, then board Bus 7024 to the final stop. From there, a walking path leads uphill to the temple grounds.
The temple garden displays 16 white statues representing Arhats, enlightened beings who guide others on their spiritual journey. These figures create a quiet focal point that many visitors overlook during their visit.
