Buyeo County, Administrative county in South Chungcheong, South Korea
Buyeo County is an administrative area in South Chungcheong located in the mid-western region of South Korea. The landscape includes hills and valleys with scattered archaeological excavation sites that contain remains from different time periods.
The region served as the capital of the Baekje Kingdom from 538 to 660 CE under the name Sabi. During this period, defensive fortifications were constructed that reflected the kingdom's power and control over the territory.
Eight archaeological sites within the county form the Baekje Historic Areas, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2015. Visitors can walk through these locations today and observe the physical remains of structures and artifacts from this ancient kingdom.
Information about tours and local events is available through the county office, which maintains regular channels for visitors. The best times to visit the archaeological sites are during drier seasons when paths and excavation areas are most accessible.
The county maintains sister city relationships with districts in Seoul, Luoyang in China, and Asuka in Japan. These connections demonstrate ongoing international recognition of the region's historical importance across different countries.
