Gwangju–Daegu Expressway, expressway in South Korea
The Gwangju-Daegu Expressway is a major highway in South Korea that connects the city of Gwangju to Daegu, stretching over more than 180 kilometers. The road passes through several towns and regions with multiple interchanges where drivers can exit to nearby cities or local roads.
The expressway opened in the early 1970s with the initial segment between Goseo and Damyang as part of the Honam Expressway branch. The network gradually expanded from the 1980s onward with new sections, and some portions were later widened to six lanes to handle increasing traffic.
Toll fees are reasonable and collected at toll gates, with electronic systems like Hi-Pass allowing you to pass without stopping. Large rest areas along the route offer restaurants, shops, restrooms, and places to relax before continuing your journey.
The road has special emergency lanes called Gakkil that are normally forbidden but can be temporarily opened during heavy traffic. This feature shows how South Korea's traffic system efficiently manages peak load days while maintaining safety.
