Severance Hospital, hospital in Seoul, South Korea
Severance Hospital is a large medical center in Sinchon-dong, Seoul, affiliated with Yonsei University and housing multiple specialized departments and clinics. Modern in design with extensive windows, its layout guides patient flow through clearly marked corridors serving pediatrics, emergency care, and outpatient services.
Founded in 1885 as Gwanghyewon, it was Korea's first Western-style medical facility established with help from American missionary Horace N. Allen. After a donation from Louis Severance in 1904, it took its current name and became affiliated with Yonsei University's medical school in 1957, later opening branches in Gangnam and Yongin.
The hospital bears the name of its financial supporter Louis Severance, symbolizing early Western medical aid to Korea. Daily activity in its corridors shows how deeply medical care is woven into the community's life.
The facility is easily accessible by public transportation with nearby bus stops and subway stations. Visitors can navigate using Korean signage throughout the corridors directing them to various departments and should expect busy conditions with many patients and staff members moving about.
The hospital performed over 20,000 robotic surgeries in 2018, setting a world record. This surgical approach allows for faster procedures with less pain for patients.
