Samtan Art Mine, Art complex in former coal mine in Jeongseon County, South Korea
Samtan Art Mine is an art center in a former coal mine in Jeongseon County. The complex consists of multiple levels with exhibition spaces, performance halls, and outdoor art installations spread across the grounds.
The mine actively extracted coal from 1964 until 2001, playing an important role in local industry. It was later transformed into an art center in 2013, preserving the site's mining past within a new cultural space.
The site displays contemporary artworks by creators from around the world, placed within underground spaces and across the grounds. These works blend with traces of the former mining operations, creating a conversation between artistic expression and the place itself.
The facility is open daily except Mondays and provides access to both underground and above-ground areas. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the site has multiple levels and pathways to explore.
The underground tunnel passages preserve the original mining structure and allow visitors to experience the working conditions of that era. These authentic spaces create a strong contrast with the modern artworks displayed within them today.
