Karatau, place in Jambyl Region, Kazakhstan
Karatau is a city in the Talas District of southern Kazakhstan, situated at the foot of the Karatau mountain range. The city sits in a flat zone between the mountains and the open steppe, with a compact center and residential neighborhoods spreading outward.
Karatau was founded during the Soviet era as an industrial city built around the mining of phosphorite deposits in the surrounding mountains. After the Soviet Union collapsed, much of the industrial activity declined, and the city lost a large part of its population.
The name Karatau comes from the mountain range that rises to the south of the city, meaning 'black mountain' in Kazakh. The range shapes the skyline and is visible from almost anywhere in the city.
Karatau is reachable by road from the regional center, and having a private vehicle makes it much easier to get around the surrounding area. The city center is small enough to explore on foot once you arrive.
The area around Karatau sits on one of the largest phosphorite deposits in the world, which is why the city was built there in the first place. Traces of that industrial past are still visible in the architecture and the old mining facilities on the outskirts.
