Amioun, town in Lebanon
Amioun is an ancient town in the Koura District situated on a hill about 1,200 feet (370 meters) above sea level between the coast and mountains, with settlement traces dating back before 1000 BC. The town combines an old core carved into rocky cliffs with 28 prehistoric caves and modern neighborhoods surrounding it, anchored by 13 churches, schools, a public library, and a private hospital.
Settlement at this location dates back to the Paleolithic period, with Egyptian records from the 14th century BC referring to the site as Amia, suggesting its role as an ancient trading point near Gebal. During the Crusades and Byzantine eras, Roman temples were converted into churches, and the town evolved into a significant Greek Orthodox center, preserving this identity through centuries of Ottoman rule and later migration waves.
Amioun has been the center of Greek Orthodox Christian life for thousands of years and remains the largest Greek Orthodox town in Lebanon with 13 churches, including Saint George Cathedral adorned with Byzantine frescoes from the 12th and 13th centuries. Religious tradition shapes the town's character, visible in how the churches define the streetscape and how residents gather for festivals and celebrations throughout the year.
The town sits in the Koura District hills between well-known destinations like the Cedars of Lebanon and Tripoli, making it accessible along the main route through the area with olive fields and vineyards all around. Wear sturdy shoes when exploring the old quarters with their rocky cliffs and prehistoric caves, especially after rain when the paths can become slippery.
The caves in the rocky cliffs show human habitation from the Paleolithic period and were partly converted into small chapels centuries later, creating an unusual link between prehistoric dwelling spaces and religious places. These stone structures silently reveal one of Lebanon's oldest continuous settlements.
