Arz Tannourine

Arz Tannourine is a protected forest area in northern Lebanon with steep mountain slopes covered by dense cedar groves. The terrain includes multiple hiking paths through the forest, along with rocky sections containing natural caves and crevices.

The area was protected in 1992 to preserve one of the last remaining cedar forests, as the original forests that once covered Middle Eastern mountains had been greatly reduced over centuries. This forest is one of the few places where you can still see old cedar groves as they existed in ancient times.

The cedars here hold deep meaning for local identity and have been central to life in the region for centuries. People visit to see these trees, which played important roles in ancient stories and remain symbols of connection to the land.

Visiting is best during the warmer months when paths are accessible and weather remains stable. Bring sturdy footwear and be prepared to walk on uneven, sometimes steep terrain.

Rare mountain flowers bloom between the cedars at high altitudes, creating colorful patches in the forest during flowering season. These plants have adapted to the harsh conditions and vanished from many other locations.
