Citadel of Tripoli, Medieval castle on Mount Pilgrim in Tripoli, Lebanon

The Citadel of Tripoli is a medieval fortress built on elevated terrain with a complex layout of interconnected spaces across multiple levels. The structure features towers, defensive walls, and various chambers that were designed for both military and residential purposes.

Construction began in the early 12th century as a Crusader stronghold designed to command the region's trade networks. The fortress subsequently fell under the control of different powers who modified its structure and adapted it to their needs.

The fortress witnessed the rise and fall of multiple rulers and became a symbol of power for those who controlled the city's trade routes. Visitors can sense how different peoples left their mark on the structure and its surroundings over time.

The site is best explored on foot, allowing visitors to move through the different levels and spaces at their own pace. Sturdy footwear is recommended since pathways are uneven and some areas contain steep stairs.

Within the fortress walls lie burial sites of Crusader knights from the original 12th-century occupation. These graves offer a rare glimpse into the lives of the warriors who first held this stronghold.
