South Governorate, Mediterranean governorate in southern Lebanon
South Governorate is an administrative region in southern Lebanon that extends from the Mediterranean coast to elevated mountainous areas. The landscape includes sandy beaches, agricultural areas with citrus cultivation, and hills that rise to varying heights above sea level.
The region became an independent administrative division in the early 1990s when it separated from Nabatiye Governorate. This administrative reorganization established its current boundaries and governance structure.
The region is home to Shia Muslims, Sunni Muslims, Druze, and Christian communities who share towns and villages across different districts. This religious diversity shapes daily life and local traditions throughout the governorate.
Several rivers flow through the region, including the Litani, Awali, and Hasbani, providing water for agriculture and communities. Visitors should expect varying accessibility between coastal areas and mountain zones, as climate and terrain differ significantly.
The region displays striking climate contrasts with cold, snowy winters in higher elevations and warm coastal summers. This temperature-driven diversity across short distances creates varied landscape zones and living conditions.
