Ain al-Hilweh, Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon

Ain al-Hilweh is a refugee settlement near Sidon and the largest of its kind in the country. The camp houses around 80,000 residents, mostly Palestinians and some Syrians, living in densely packed neighborhoods with limited space and basic facilities and services.

The settlement was established to house Palestinians displaced from their homeland and has become a permanent community over the decades. In recent years, armed conflicts have caused significant destruction and forced many families to leave their homes temporarily or permanently.

The name comes from a natural spring that existed in this area before the settlement was established. Residents maintain strong community bonds through shared spaces and collective efforts, which form the foundation of daily life despite the challenges they face.

The settlement is densely packed with narrow streets and limited open space, so allow extra time for walking and watch for ongoing construction or damaged areas. Check local conditions and safety information before visiting, as this remains an active community facing challenges.

Nongovernmental groups have worked for over a decade to repair schools, supply medical clinics, and train young people in practical skills like cooking, photography, and first aid. These efforts have helped residents maintain education and build income opportunities despite ongoing instability.
