Saraain El Faouqa

Saraain El Faouqa is an archaeological site with remnants of a Roman temple located at an elevation of about 1,100 meters (3,600 feet). The site features ancient walls, a raised platform structure, and rock-cut chambers nearby.

The site was discovered in 1946 and holds evidence from multiple periods, spanning from early stone age tools to Roman times. This layering of different eras shows how the location remained important across many centuries.

The temple reflects Roman religious building traditions that were common throughout this region during ancient times. Visitors can see how the structure was designed to serve the spiritual needs of the community that once gathered here.

The site sits at high elevation and requires sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness to explore the scattered archaeological remains. Visit during cooler months since the altitude and exposed terrain make conditions challenging in summer heat.

Beneath the temple lies an ancient stone quarry where workers extracted raw material in earlier times. Scattered stone tools and tool fragments scattered across the ground reveal traces of this earlier extraction work.
