Rathna ella, Waterfall in Hasalaka, Sri Lanka
Rathna Ella is a waterfall in Hasalaka that drops roughly 100 meters through several tiers, creating broad cascades of water as it descends. The water originates from the Knuckles mountain range and forms a striking curtain as it flows over the rocky steps.
This waterfall has served as a natural water source for the surrounding farming community over many generations. Its reliable flow has long supported traditional irrigation methods that shape life in the region.
Local farmers continue their traditional methods of paddy cultivation near the waterfall, supported by water resources that nurture approximately 200 agricultural families.
Access is via the road from Kandy to Mahiyangana that passes through Hasalaka town, following a route that winds through varying landscapes. The best time to visit is during or after the rainy season, when the water flow is strongest and the display is most impressive.
This spot sits at the boundary between the climate and vegetation zones of the lowlands and the Kandy highlands. This position creates a rare environment where tropical plants of the flatlands meet the cooler flora of the mountain region.
