Settat, city in Morocco
Settat is a large city in Settat Province, within the Chaouia-Ouardigha region of Morocco, sitting on a wide, flat plateau. The city is organized around a commercial center with a market, administrative buildings, and residential areas spreading outward from there.
Settat grew over time into the main administrative and trading center of the Chaouia region, an area long known for grain farming. Its position along trade routes linking the Atlantic coast to the Moroccan interior helped drive its growth.
The name comes from the Amazigh word for plain, which describes the flat land around the city well. The central market is where daily life plays out most visibly, with vendors selling fresh produce alongside small shops and cafes.
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable times to visit, as the plateau gets very hot in summer. The city center is easy to walk around, with the market and main buildings close to each other.
Settat is home to some of Morocco's largest cement plants, which are visible on the outskirts of the city and shape part of its skyline. This makes the city one of the country's main suppliers of construction materials, which is not something most visitors would expect from a place of this size.
