Al Haouz Province

Al Haouz is a province in the Marrakesh-Safi region that spreads across mountains and valleys, containing around 30 municipalities with rural settlements and the main town of Tahannaout. The landscape ranges from the Atlas Mountains to flatter areas where farming communities live.

The province was originally part of the Marrakesh-Tensift-El Haouz region until 2015, when administrative reforms transferred it to the newly created Marrakesh-Safi region. This change reorganized the province's governance structure to match the country's broader regional reorganization.

Berber communities throughout the province practice traditional crafts, weave carpets, and gather for seasonal celebrations tied to farming and nature's cycles. These customs shape how people live and work in their villages and local markets.

Travelers can reach the province via road from Marrakesh, with local transport connecting the main towns of Ait Ourir, Amizmiz, and Asni. Roads are mountainous in places, so plan for longer travel times between settlements.

Oukaimden hosts Africa's highest ski resort, where visitors can experience winter sports at significant elevation during the snow season. This surprising location reveals a very different side of what the landscape offers.
