Marrakesh-Safi is an administrative region in central Morocco that extends from the Atlantic coast to the High Atlas mountains and includes eight provinces and prefectures. The territory was formed in 2015 through the merger of Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz with Safi and Youssoufia provinces from the former Doukkala-Abda region.
The region was established in 2015 when Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz merged with the former Safi and Youssoufia provinces. This reorganization created a larger administrative unit combining coastal and mountain areas under one governance structure.
Artisans across the region continue traditional crafts such as pottery in Safi, leather work in Marrakesh, and woodworking in Essaouira, keeping these techniques alive in their communities. These skills remain central to local identity and provide livelihoods for many families.
The region is connected to other parts of Morocco by the A7 motorway, railway networks, and Marrakesh Menara International Airport. Visitors can easily travel between coastal towns and mountain areas using different transport options available throughout the territory.
A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the region in September 2023, causing significant impact on local infrastructure and communities. This event prompted major changes in how communities have reorganized and rebuilt in the aftermath.
