Thanlyin Bridge, River crossing in Yangon, Myanmar
Thanlyin Bridge is a multi-purpose crossing that carries vehicles, trains, and pedestrians across the Bago River. The structure features separate lanes for different traffic types, making it a major transportation link between Yangon and areas to the south.
Construction began in 1985 with support from China but stopped for several months during the political changes of the late 1980s. After resuming, the project was completed to create a crossing over the river.
The structure enhances transportation between Yangon and Thanlyin, connecting local communities and supporting the development of the Thilawa port industrial zone.
The crossing is open during daylight hours and allows different types of vehicles and pedestrians to pass safely. Separate pathways on both sides make it easier for walkers to navigate the crossing.
The bridge received funding through a 207 million yen interest-free loan from China and required a total investment of 1.65 billion Myanmar kyats.
