Bayan-Ölgii Province

The mountainous Bayan-Ölgii province spans 45,704 square kilometers at an elevation of 1,710 meters, bordered by Russia and China in western Mongolia.

The establishment of Bayan-Ölgii as a separate administrative region occurred in 1940, following increased settlement of Kazakh populations fleeing from Russian pressures.

The province maintains a population that is 93 percent ethnic Kazakh, making it the only Muslim-majority region in Mongolia with distinct cultural traditions.

Ölgii Airport connects the province to Ulaanbaatar with regular flights, while the region offers limited paved roads and seasonal border crossings to neighboring countries.

The region hosts 80 percent of the world's eagle hunters, who practice traditional hunting methods within the Altai Mountains throughout the year.
