Samalayuca Dune Fields

The Samalayuca Dune Fields form a protected desert region in Chihuahua with expansive sand formations. A visitor center provides facilities, walking paths, and designated zones for recreational activities like off-road riding and overnight camping.

People have crossed through this area for more than 1500 years, leaving behind rock carvings and petroglyphs as evidence. Later, merchants and travelers navigated the dunes as part of routes connecting Chihuahua to El Paso.

Local communities have long viewed this place as a vital crossroads and refuge across centuries. Today you can see how the landscape shaped the routes people used and the stories they tell about traveling through.

Visitors will find restaurants and restrooms on site along with marked trails for safe exploration. Bring plenty of water, wear sun protection, and be prepared for intense heat and bright sunlight during your time there.

Over 200 plant and animal species inhabit the area and have adapted to the harsh desert conditions. Close observation reveals how these organisms have developed strategies to survive in this challenging environment.
