The Shanker Hotel, hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal
The Shanker Hotel is a guesthouse in Kathmandu located in a building from the 19th century that originally served as a residence for Nepalese rulers. The exterior retains the original design while the rooms and shared spaces have been modernized to provide comfort for travelers.
The building was constructed in 1894 as a palace for a general of the Nepalese army and displayed neoclassical design with European influences. In 1964, Ram Shanker Shrestha took over the building and transformed it into a hotel while preserving the historic facade.
The hotel is named after the Shanker family, who took over the palace in 1964 and transformed it into a guesthouse. The name and management by family members reflects the personal character that visitors experience today.
The hotel is located in Lazimpat, just a few minutes from the Narayanhiti Palace Museum and bustling Thamel, allowing visitors to easily walk to historic sites and shopping districts. It provides free parking for over 200 cars, free WiFi, a pool, spa, and airport shuttle.
Several carved wooden windows in the lobby bar date back more than 200 years and display handcrafted details from an earlier era. Queen Aishwarya and other members of the Nepalese royal family were also born in this palace, giving it a rare historical connection to the royal line.
