Arabian Oryx Sanctuary

The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary spans 2,824 square kilometers between coastal mountains and central desert, where seasonal fog supports native plant growth.

The sanctuary became Oman's first natural reserve in 1994 and gained UNESCO World Heritage status the same year to protect endangered Arabian oryx.

The Arabian Oryx Sanctuary represents regional conservation efforts after these animals disappeared from the wild in the early 1970s due to hunting.

Visitors can observe over 600 Arabian oryx in their natural habitat through guided tours that support environmental tourism initiatives.

The sanctuary includes Wadi Ja'aluni, the last location where wild Arabian oryx grazed in the late 1960s before their local extinction.
