Al Hoota Cave

Al Hoota Cave, Natural cave in Al Hamra, Oman

Al Hoota Cave is an underground cave system in the Hajar Mountains that contains extensive passages, underground lakes, and rock formations. The chambers display stalactites, stalagmites, and mineral deposits shaped by water over millions of years.

The cave formed millions of years ago as water gradually eroded the limestone in the northern mountains of Oman. Over vast stretches of time, flowing water carved out the passages and lakes seen today.

The cave holds deep meaning for locals in Al Hamra, who have long shared stories about what lies hidden in its depths. Walking through the passages, visitors sense how this place connects the region's people to the natural world around them.

Visitors enter the cave by electric train from the reception center, making the descent easy and accessible. The temperature underground stays constant year-round, so dressing lightly is advisable for comfort.

The underground lakes are home to a rare species of blind fish that evolved to live in complete darkness. These small creatures have adapted over thousands of years and represent an unusual form of aquatic life.
