Rann of Kutch, Salt marsh ecoregion in Gujarat, India.
Rann of Kutch is a salt marsh ecoregion in northwestern Gujarat state, near the border with Pakistan. The terrain consists of flat expanses that transform into white crusted salt plains during dry months and turn into shallow wetlands when monsoon rains arrive.
The area was once connected to the Arabian Sea and allowed maritime trade in ancient times. An earthquake in the 19th century altered the landscape and blocked this connection permanently.
The Rann Utsav festival brings together artists, performers, and craftspeople from November to February, showcasing regional textiles, pottery, and traditional dance forms.
Visitors need a permit from local authorities, available in the city of Bhuj. Guided tours help with orientation in the protected zones, which are only accessible during certain seasons.
Wild asses live here as India's only free-ranging population and share the habitat with thousands of flamingos. The birds nest during winter months in the shallow waters of the marsh.
