Karachi Nuclear Power Plant, Nuclear power facility in Paradise Point, Karachi, Pakistan
Karachi Nuclear Power Plant is an electricity generation facility in Paradise Point comprising three operational reactors. The oldest unit produces 137MW while the two newer reactors each generate 1,100MW of electrical output.
Operations began in 1971 with a Canadian-designed CANDU reactor, opening Pakistan's path to commercial nuclear electricity generation. This milestone marked the country's entry into civilian atomic energy.
The establishment of this nuclear facility represented Pakistan's commitment to technological advancement under the guidance of physicist Abdus Salam.
The two newer reactors feature emergency cooling systems that can operate for 72 hours without external power supply. This safety feature is integral to the facility's design and operation.
The newest reactors employ Chinese HPR1000 technology, making this the first facility outside China to use this advanced reactor design. This technical choice reflects international collaboration in nuclear energy development.
