Chiniot District, Administrative district in Punjab, Pakistan
Chiniot District is an administrative division in Punjab with three administrative subdivisions and a mix of urban and rural settlements. Its administrative center is located in the city of Chiniot, and the region covers approximately 2,643 square kilometers (1,021 square miles) in total.
The region was once a dry area between the Chenab and Ravi rivers until the Chenab Canal was built in the late 1800s. This irrigation project transformed barren landscapes into productive farmland and fundamentally shaped the district's economic development.
Local craftsmen here produce elaborately carved wooden furniture using techniques passed down through generations. You can see these works in small workshops throughout the area, where traditional skills remain very much alive today.
The region can become very hot during warmer months, so plan visits during cooler times of day. The city of Chiniot serves as the main hub and is easy to reach as a starting point for exploring the district.
The district contains Omar Hayat Mahal, a 19th-century palace with impressive carved wooden details throughout its walls and ceilings. This building showcases the craftsmanship the region is known for and stands as a quiet testament to past grandeur.
