Monsanto Forest Park, Nature reserve in western Lisbon, Portugal
Parque Florestal de Monsanto is a forest park with over 1000 hectares of diverse tree species, walking trails, sports facilities, and several recreational areas. The terrain includes fourteen marked footpaths, Portugal's largest artificial climbing wall, and numerous outdoor fitness stations throughout the grounds.
The reforestation project was started in 1934 by Minister Duarte Pacheco to transform bare hills into green space. Local farmers and prisoners worked together to rebuild the forest and establish what is now the park.
The park is home to the headquarters of Quercus, Portugal's main environmental conservation organization, which runs national protection programs from this location. Visitors can learn about the organization's work through information panels and nature education areas scattered throughout the forest.
The park is accessible from multiple entrances with parking available at the main access points, making it convenient to arrive by car. The walking trails vary in difficulty depending on the terrain, allowing visitors to choose a route suited to their fitness level.
The Monsanto Park Circuit hosted the 1959 Portuguese Formula One Grand Prix within the forest, showing an unusual blend of motorsport and natural space. This historical connection remains marked and documented throughout the park today.
