Dukhan, city of Qatar
Dukhan is a small town on Qatar's western coast overlooking the Arabian Gulf with sandy lands and rocky areas dotted throughout. It features simple houses along quiet streets that give way to open desert landscape, creating a sparse and straightforward setting.
Oil was discovered in this area in 1939 and the first drill was completed in 1940, marking Qatar's entry into the oil industry. This discovery transformed Dukhan from an empty desert settlement into an industrial hub that shaped the nation's economic future.
The name Dukhan means 'smoke' in Arabic, likely referring to natural gas found below the surface. Local traditions rooted in fishing and desert survival remain part of the town's identity through stories passed down by long-time residents about life before the oil industry took over.
The town lies about 80 kilometers west of Doha via the Dukhan Highway and is roughly an hour's drive from Hamad International Airport. Visitors should bring light clothing and water due to the hot and dry climate, and be aware that services are limited to small shops and a few restaurants.
This was one of the first places in Qatar where oil drilling occurred and old rigs remain visible near the town today. These remnants show directly how the oil discovery transformed the settlement from an empty desert location into an industrial and residential center.
