Mezmay, Mountain settlement in Apsheronsky District, Russia
Mezmay is a mountain settlement at around 717 meters elevation in Apsheronsky District, positioned between three mountain ranges where two rivers meet. The area is surrounded by green forests and offers several guest houses along with recreation and sports facilities for visitors.
The settlement was established in 1868 after Circassian tribes left the region and loggers and miners moved into the area. This founding moment marked the beginning of human settlement in this mountain valley.
The name comes from Circassian words referring to the wild apple trees that once grew in this area. Visitors can still sense this traditional connection to the land when walking through the settlement.
The village has basic accommodations and recreation facilities, but shopping options are limited. The unpaved roads require good footwear and patience, especially in wet weather.
An important archaeological discovery was made in 1993 in a nearby cave, where scientists uncovered remains from prehistoric times. These findings helped researchers learn more about early human populations.
