Russian Black Sea Coast, Coastal region in Krasnodar Krai and Crimean Peninsula, Russia
The Russian Black Sea Coast runs for several hundred kilometers from Anapa to Adler and includes pebble and sandy beaches. The Caucasus mountain ranges reach the shore in some sections and form steep stretches covered with dense vegetation.
The coastal area became part of Russia in the early 19th century and was incorporated following wars with the Ottoman Empire. Development of resorts began under Russian and later Soviet administration and increased during the 20th century.
Local resorts show features from the Soviet period mixed with newer hotels and leisure facilities. The cuisine combines Russian traditions with Caucasian influences found in the surrounding mountains.
Visitors reach most coastal sections through airports in Sochi or Anapa as well as trains and buses. The bathing season focuses on the months from June through September.
The beaches around Gelendzhik and Tuapse sit close to mountain slopes with subtropical forests. Some coastal towns once served as sanatoriums for party officials and athletes from the Soviet Union.
