Originally established in October 2011 as a domestic facility, the airport transformed into an international gateway in March 2021 when the General Authority of Civil Aviation approved international flight operations.

In November 2022, the facility opened Saudi Arabia's first dedicated private aircraft hangar spanning 3,000 square meters and managed by Saudia Private since October 2023.
